Under Auckland’s Karangahape Rd, tucked behind an unassuming door at St Kevin’s Arcade, the local five-piece band, Dick Move, has been meeting for years in the dimly lit Whammy Bar. There, they play intimate gigs, share beers, and engage in profound 3am discussions.
But there's more to their story – a narrative that's taken almost two years to unfold and almost didn't happen at all: the opportunity to open three shows for the Foo Fighters.
The lineup, featuring vocalist Lucy Suttor, guitarists Hariet Ellis and Justin Rendell, bassist Lulu Macrae, and drummer Luke Boyes, forms a socialist punk band that has been igniting crowds of no more than 700 for nearly five years.
Tonight marks a significant shift as they step onto a stage in front of an estimated 50,000 people – undoubtedly the largest gig of their lives.
Dick Move crafts songs that channel the essence of punk, tackling themes such as politics, social issues, privilege, and holding influential figures accountable.
"We make music about social and political issues, and the aim is to get people fired up to make a positive change in the world — and we like to have fun while doing it," shared Suttor with 1News.
While reluctant to label themselves as musicians or activists, they see their art as a fusion of both, drawing inspiration from real-world experiences.
"The things we write about are the things we’re talking about at the bar at 3 am [like] during the election," explained Suttor, "It’s one thing feeding the other."
Dick Move took a moment with 1News at their customary venue to reflect on their journey, discuss the upcoming shows with Dave Grohl and company, and ponder what lies ahead after the stadium-sized mosh pits disperse and all the Foo has been fought. foo fighters auckland foo fighters foo fighters christchurch spark arena foo fighters nz mt smart stadium dave grohl foo fighters auckland 2024 the breeders go media stadium foo fighters setlist mount smart stadium dick move band foo fighters tickets concerts auckland josh freese mt smart taylor hawkins foo fighters auckland set times foo fighters concert foo fighters songs foo fighters setlist 2024 foo fighters auckland opening act foo fighter foo fighters concert auckland
